Sustainable manufacturing
We’re reducing the impacts of our products by reducing emissions and avoiding food waste.
Our rice mill and factory in Essex are closely managed through state-of-the-art technologies.
Since 2018, we have reduced our carbon footprint by 17% and have used 100% electricity from renewable sources for our manufacturing since 2020. We calculated our scope 3 emissions for the first time in 2023, following the GHG Protocol standards, to support our net-zero journey.
Avoiding food waste is crucial to combating climate change. No by-product of our milling process goes to waste, and we divert our food waste from landfill to anaerobic digestion as part of a circular system.
In 2023, 100% of our waste was diverted from landfill, and 87% was recycled.
Evolving our packaging
High-quality packaging is crucial to ensuring product safety, extending shelf life and avoiding food waste. Developing new packaging requires innovative approaches that balance functionality with environmentally friendly materials.
We’ve reduced the average annual weight of plastic packaging going to market by 637 tonnes since 2009 for our ready-to-heat pouches and by 27 tonnes across the rest of our packaging since 2017.
We’ve set clear commitments to improve our packaging and will ensure it is 100% recyclable ahead of the introduction of consistent kerbside collections across the UK in 2027. We’ve already transitioned some product packaging to a recycle-ready mono laminate and more will follow.
Caring for our team
Our team of 280 direct employees is a fusion of people from different backgrounds and cultures who make a unique contribution to bring our purpose to life. We support and encourage them to develop their skills and pay above the national living wage.
Tilda serves diverse and multicultural communities and the diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) of our workforce are essential for success. We listen to and act on employee views and uphold human rights both in our own activities and across our supply chain.
Protecting the safety and health of our employees and stakeholders is a top priority and we are constantly improving our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). Our employee assistance
programme (EAP) provides support on topics spanning well-being to finance, and we are developing a partnership with the charity MIND to provide Mental Health Awareness training to all our people managers.
